Backer painting as long term loan in Berlin

Thursday, 7 April 2005

A huge group portrait by Adriaen Backer (1635/36-1684) is presented as a long term loan from the Amsterdams Historisch Museum in the Berlin Gemäldegalerie. Painted in 1676, it shows the governors and governesses of the Amsterdam Oudemannen- en Vrouwengasthuis.

The Gemäldegalerie is proud to be able to show that important kind of Dutch portraiture to the Berlin public. Our thanks go to both Pauline W. Kruseman and Norbert Middelkoop from the Amsterdams Historisch Museum.

Prof. Dr. Bernd Wolfgang Lindemann
Director, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin - Gemäldegalerie
