These European paintings selected from the permanent collection show seventeenth-century artists directing their viewers to important concepts or ideals. For these allegories, histories and landscapes, artists drew on reality but also on the imagination, in order to communicate things that one did not see: products of the mind. Their wide range of subject matter points towards an open and universal vision, paralleling the development of the sciences in this age.
