For many centuries European artists saw the telling of stories as their highest challenge. Those working in the Baroque era were often drawn to scenes of sudden change, and focused on the grand emotions and significance of these moments. Featuring works by Rembrandt, El Greco and Govert Flinck, this exhibition underscores the richness of the permanent collection in dramatic narrative depictions, and explores the various approaches to "history painting" and the ways in which these artists achieved their heightened, occasionally extreme, effects.
